This is a petition I (Tamara Rubin) started to help clean up the lead in schools in my home-town of Portland, Oregon. I am sharing it with you so you can use it as an example – but please also consider signing it. Mandating that schools are made lead-safe (all the time, not just during renovation) would be 1) good for the kids, 2) reduce the burden on the special education system and 3) create jobs for the EPA RRP Certified contractors needed to clean up the hazards in these schools.
This issue is especially timely and relevant to me as I have not yet been able to find a FREE and APPROPRIATE (safe for my child) facility to send my child to school to – as is his right by federal law. Each of the Portland Public Schools that the school district has proposed as placement for Avi (schools that may have had appropriate programs or teachers) has had extreme / ongoing existing lead hazards.
As Avi was already lead-injured it is not reasonable to send him to a school that could increase his risk of additional injury through exposure to lead dust.
Thank you for your time.
